I'm the world's worst vegetarian, because I'm not a vegetarian. I'm a pescetarian, which means I still eat fish, except I can't be bothered with the hassle that comes with explaining why. So I just say 'vegetarian' for ease.
Then Holly and I spoke about it on Twitter and she pointed out (quite rightly) that correct terminology was important. She's a vegetarian and people keep thinking she still eats fish so she's been served it at peoples' houses when she's round for tea.
I couldn't put my finger on it, but last summer, I started to feel weird about eating meat. And I love eating meat. Chicken thigh in my fajitas, grilled salmon with garlic butter and parma ham in my scrambled eggs on Sundays. I didn't watch a harrowing documentary about production or research sustainability statistics. I just started to feel weird.
It turned out, Mike had been feeling the same and we decided to trial going veggie, just to see how we'd get on. At this point, I was eating meat in some form for three meals a day, seven days a week so I was dubious I could go cold turkey (BAHAHA what a good pun).
It wasn't as hard as I thought. I used up some chicken from the freezer (I'd paid £8 for it) and made bacon rolls for Mike's family when they built our garden shed, but didn't have one myself. Other than that, no meat entered my house from August until Christmas.
With Christmas, Hogmanay and my birthday in the space of eight days, we had Meat Week. It was absolutely delicious andI honestly could have done without it all. It was a last hurrah, but made me realise I wanted to stick with the pescetarianism.
I hope I'll eventually start to cut out fish too. Sustainability-wise, it's making a mess of the ocean as much as meat is making a mess of the land. The only current justification I have is that I'd be willing to kill my own, in a way I'd never be able to do with a chicken or cow. But it's not a very good justification. Since I've gone from eating loads and loads of meat to nothing, I won't beat myself up too much for now.
